The transformation of the industrial city to a post-industrial landscape is a challenge for designers and planners. New paradigms and working methods for the built environment have to be developed. Students in the field of architecture and urbanism should be trained to plan, design and manage the field of the post-industrial city and its surroundings, taking in account changing societal and spatial conditions, as well as the specific characteristics and regional identities of the European city and landscape.

For this educational challenge several European universities and schools have united in META-University to combine their strengths and specific expertise in order to develop a Joint Master Program (JMP) entitled:

PLANNING AND DESIGN OF THE POSTINDUSTRIAL LANDSCAPE

META-U is a cooperation of several universities and schools of architecture and urban planning in Europe. The main goal is to stimulate international student, staff and knowledge exchange as well as develope an international network and strong intercultural relations. Different types of institutions with different attitudes and work styles can derive huge benefit from each other when they find common ground. The participating universities, al with their own strengths and qualities find these grounds in META-U.

The background idea is to provide a high level Joint Master Program (JMP), with possibilities towards PhD-programs.

META-U is organized around the framework of the educational and also the research-programs, as defined by the participating universities. In this way the in-depth character of the study is ensured. The consequence of this is that, rather then a mere sum of courses and projects, the program can offer tailor-made study components. A substantial part of the content of the different study-modules will therefore be determined by the fields of research of each university.

Meta University and Socrates development Program

The JMP has been developed as part of a Socrates Development Program sponsored by EU. The objectives of this Socrates Development Program are:

Coherent META-Joint Master-program on the Planning and Design of the Post-Industrial Landscape linked to the Master-programs of all participating school according to the rules of META-University

Modules on the key issues, comprising lectures, classes, studio work, and module books (language preferably (International) English)

  • A student mobility scheme
  • Joint student workshops related to the key issues, including staff mobility
  • Links between the Master Program education and PhD-research in the International Graduate School USO-Built.

The duration of the project and funding period EU is from 2003 to 2006

           Contents of JMP

The JMP offers courses in the field of Architecture and Urbanism. Six core issues are addressed:

-           Architectural Design & Theory

-           Cities in Transition

-           Information Design & Representation

-           Integrated Building Design

-           Sustainable & User Oriented Planning & Design

-           Territorial Cohesion & Heritage

On these issues educational modules have been be developed as part of the JMP. In relation to this the Modules also can frame research activities at PhD-level.

Participating institutes of the Meta University Consortium contribute to these modules by education and research.

Each module is coordinated by one if the participating institutes.

Together the Modules frame the Module Book of the JMP.

A  module consists of:

-           Name of the module

-           Description of theme and content

-           Coordinating institute and other participating institutes

-           Specific approach of institutes

-           Course offerings

The participating Institutes in the JMP Planning & Design of the Post-industrial Landscape are:

-           Technische Universiteit Eindhoven, The Netherlands

-           University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, United Kingdom

-           Sint Lucas,  Architectuur, Brussels and Ghent, Belgium
