About Glasgow

Glasgow is an 800 year old city, it’s most notable period of development being it’s industrialisation between the 18th and 19th Centuries. It’s reputation and now it’s legacy rests primarily on it’s heavy industry, shipbuilding and steam locomotion, and on its trading activities. The ‘working’city, much of it centred on the renowned River Clyde, in it’s heyday became known as the 2nd city of the British Empire. Since the decline of it’s industrial basis, and subsequently becoming known as the tough ‘no mean city’, the city has now re-invented itself in the last three decades, building on it’s inherent formal and physical and cultural attributes, ultimately being recognised as European City of Culture in 1990. Today the city is undergoing considerable development, the formal character, the city of stone remains, but is complemented by a contemporary rejuvenation, whilst retaining the welcoming aspect of its’ people focused culture. The University of Strathclyde Department of Architecture, located in the heart of the city, prides itself on it’s teaching practice that supports the individuality and personal investigation by the student, whilst at the same time encourages the relationship and responsibility of the individual to the collective. The school is relatively small by European standards, and enjoys an intimate learning environment. The Department is part of a long established Institution of higher education, , the university itself dating from the 16th Century. The Department of Architecture curriculum is fully accredited and validated by the national professional bodies, the Architects Registration Board, and the Royal Incorporation of British Architects. Curriculum structure recognises the Bologna agreement, and runs three-year degree, followed by two year masters programmes, supported by single year masters in other fields. The curriculum throughout encourages integration between all areas of architectural endeavour, whilst maintaining a diversity of opportunity for the student to engage with the subject. Staff, the majority of whom are registered with the national Higher Education Academy, are multi national and multi cultural, with a rich compliment of individual fields of interest, in urbanity, means of representation, cultural, construction, environmental and sustainability issues and the Department has a considerable relationship to architectural practice through it’s large contingent of practicing architect design studio staff. There is along standing and fully ingrained Foreign Exchange programme in the Department, with links to Asia, North and South America, and Europe
