About Brussels and Ghent

Brussels is a cosmopolitan city with a liveliness and appeal related to its role as a crossroads for all of Europe. The city of Brussels is not only the capital of the Kingdom of Belgium, but also the capital of the Flemish and the French Community. Architectural styles range from Gothic cathedrals and churches to the gracious classical facades of the Palais des Nations, the Royal Palace and to the many art nouveau and art deco houses in the comfortable neighbourhoods. Brussels is also the capital of Europe, home of a large number of European institutions such as the European Commission as well as of numerous international institutions (NATO). With its 159 embassies and 2500 diplomats, Brussels is also the second most important diplomatic city worldwide. Brussels has developed into a multicultural and multilingual community, which makes it very attractive to the international student community. Ghent, the fourth largest city of Belgium, is the real diamond of Flanders and Belgium. In a unique way, Ghent has managed to preserve its medieval power while keeping up with the times. The city centre alone is a showcase of medieval Flemish wealth and commercial success. Modern Ghent certainly cannot be overlooked in Belgium. The presence of so many young people and students has turned Ghent into an important Flemish cultural centre. In this regard, the city of Ghent provides everyone with a particular interest in the most diverse aspects of architecture with unexpected opportunities to expose, challenge and widen one's own frame of reference. Whatever key issue is addressed, the St-Lucas campus in Ghent offers you a well accommodated base camp from where architecture can be researched from its most diverse entry- and viewpoints.
