With 220,000 inhabitants, Lille is part of an urban community of 87 towns, with more than 1 million inhabitants, making it the fourth largest city in France. Its huge cultural diversity and its dynamism have contributed to the city's nomination of the 2004 "European Capital of Culture". The brand new district of the city, Euralille, which was inaugurated in 1994, is the living example of a highly successful conversion. High speed trains now leave for Brussels, London and Paris - placing Lille at the centre of north western Europe, at some 12 km from the Belgian border.
The Lille National Superior School of Architecture and Landscape (ENSAPL) is an establishment of higher education under tutelage of the Ministry of Culture and Communication. With 850 inscribed students, about 70 awarding a diploma a year, a hundred of teachers and researchers, it is among the first state schools in region (20 in total, 14 in region, 6 in Paris). His basin of conscription includes in most cases all north of France (Nord-Pas-de-Calais, Picardy, Champagne-Ardenne) even if its students come often also from other regions and of course from abroad.
The school is located in Villeneuve d' Ascq, "ville nouvelle" of the beginning of the seventies. The school is located close to universities of Lille 1 and Lille 3, encircled by superior schools of technology accompanied by a rich diversity of laboratories and research institutes.
Opened on its geographical, university, scientific and professional environment, our school is preoccupied about the insertion of our young students awarded with a diploma (Bachelor and Master of architecture, state diploma for landscape). We prepare them for the workmanship of architectural and urban project and the diversification of the work that they can achieve. The initial training of the school is resolutely meant to be that " of a non-specialised architect " in the complete and noble sense of term: of a humanist and university culture, where the dimension of history is very important. Our pedagogic plan wants to articulate these references with the education of the comprehension of architecture, city and territories.
