The Bauhaus University Weimar builds upon a 150 year tradition of art, design and architecture of international repute and is one of the most important institutions of its kind in Germany.
The university offers a unique multi-disciplinary profile with faculties of architecture, civil and construction engineering, design and media studies. Building upon engineering and architecture-oriented disciplines, the Bauhaus-University Weimar has developed a broad profile of teaching and research activities. The spectrum encompasses more than 20 different study courses and ranges from fine art and design, visual communication, media and cultural studies to architecture, construction engineering, materials science, process engineering and environmental and management studies. The term “Bauhaus” stands for experimental openness, creativity, relatedness to industrial practice and international orientation.
The Faculty of Architecture currently has 28 research and teaching chairs, including those headed by junior professors. Approximately 1600 students are currently enroled in the Faculty of Architecture, the second largest architectural faculty in Germany. The Faculty of Architecture focuses on the development of professional work skills through a combination of scientific and academic courses. Interdisciplinary coursework addresses modern-day issues in detail, for instance ecology, building economy, building technology and design as well as through numerous research projects. Special areas of graduate study include town planning, construction site management, computer aided planning, design methodology and conservation.
