Chalmers University of Technology has its origins in the "Industrial School" which opened in Göteborg on 5 November 1829 under the name "Chalmersska Slöjdskolan" [Chalmers School of Arts and Crafts] - entirely funded with the money bequeathed by William Chalmers (1748-1811), director of the Swedish East India Company, for poor children, who have learned to read and write. When it opened, the school had ten pupils and three teachers. The subjects taught were mathematics, physics, chemistry, chemical technology, the manufacture of mechanical models, and technical drawing. Today Chalmers consist of 17 faculties/departments with a total of 8 000 undergraduates and 2 300 faculty, post-graduate students, and technical and administrative staff. The school of architecture and Urban Planning is one of those departments and has 400 undergraduates students and 34 post-graduate students. Chalmers’ ambition is to be a leading university of technology, with strong foundation in natural science, mathematics and architecture. The University is located at Gothenburg, on Sweden’s west coast, which is Scandinavia’s chief port and Sweden’s second city and has a population of almost half a million. The Gothenburg region is an old and exciting cultural area. The many ruins in the area prove that people were already living here 8,000 years ago. Göteborg, which was granted its charter in 1621, was intended to act as Sweden’s gateway to the west. Its position was strategic. The area around the mouth of "Göta Älv", the river, had been an important trading centre since the 12th century.
